Through the years, I’ve collected some great quotes about human relationships with dogs. So many of these have inspired my own thinking about how we live with them and teach them; or about how they teach us.
These are some of my favorites:
“We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. In return, they give us their all. It is the best deal that man has ever made”.-F. Macklan
“The quality of a society will be judged on how they treat their animals”-Mahatma Gandhi
“In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn’t merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point is to open oneself to becoming partly a dog”-Edward Hoagland
“Acquiring a dog may be the only time a person gets to choose a relative”- Unknown
“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion”-Unknown
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”-Anatole
“Never, never be afraid to do what is right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way. ” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
“A dog owns nothing, yet is seldom dissatisfied”- Irish proverb
“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself” Josh Billings
“Quis amat me, amat et canem meum”- (“He who loves me, loves my dog”) old Roman saying, but attributed to St. Bernard, in 1120 A.D.
“Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole” -Roger Caras
“I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be, if we weren’t certain we knew better” -George Bird Evans
“Money will buy you a pretty good dog, but it won’t buy the wag of his tail” -Henry Wheeler- Shaw
“Things that may upset a Terrier may pass virtually unnoticed by a Great Dane”-Smiley Blanton
“Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really”-Agnes Sligh Trunbull
“One reason that a dog can be such a comfort when we’re feeling blue, is that he doesn’t try to find out why”- Unknown
“The reason that a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail, and not his tongue”- Unknown
“If a dog will not come to you after having looked you in the face, you should go home and examine your conscience”-Woodrow Wilson
